How to Sleeve Pokémon Cards: A Careful Opening Routine
Prepare your sleeves before opening the packs, handle cards by their edges and protect the cards you plan to keep before stacking or sorting them. A careful routine reduces unnecessary handling. It cannot reverse existing damage or guarantee a future grading result.
Check fit before starting
Ultra PRO Premium Card Sleeves (100-Pack) are listed for standard 2.5 × 3.5 inch cards up to 35pt thick. They are clear soft sleeves. The listed fit should be checked against the actual card and any outer holder you intend to use.
Do not put an oversize promo into a standard sleeve. Products such as the Mew Figure Collection and named ex Boxes can include oversized cards, which need storage sized for those cards. The same caution applies to unusually thick or nonstandard collectibles.
Set up the workspace
Use a clean, dry, uncluttered surface with enough room to separate sleeved cards from wrappers and unsorted stacks. Wash and dry your hands before handling the cards. Move drinks away and prepare an empty area for the cards you want to protect first.
Inspect the sleeve opening for debris, damage or a distorted edge. Replace a sleeve that looks dirty or scratched. A small preparation step is easier than repeatedly removing a card later because you noticed a problem after sorting.
Insert without forcing the corners
Hold the card at its edges, gently open the sleeve mouth and align the card with the opening. Slide it in slowly without forcing it past resistance. If the card catches, stop and realign or choose a better-fitting sleeve rather than pushing harder.
Avoid touching the card face while making adjustments. Do not rub a foil surface or use a household cleaning product to improve its appearance. If you discover damage, protect the card as it is and reassess its condition separately.
Add outer protection when it fits your use
A compatible rigid holder can add support for a card that will be handled, displayed or transported. Check that the holder accommodates the sleeved card and the correct thickness. A tight fit that requires force is a reason to stop.
Use the holder according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Soft sleeves and rigid holders have different jobs; an outer holder does not make rough insertion safe. For a binder, verify that its pockets accept the sleeved card without bending or squeezing it.
Keep the opening and storage plans separate
One 100-pack of sleeves does not automatically cover every card from a large opening. Decide whether you are sleeving selected cards or every standard-size card, then estimate supplies accordingly. Keep a few spare sleeves for replacements.
After sleeving, store the cards where they will not move around or be compressed. Label your storage by set or collection so you can find cards without unnecessary handling. For the next step, read the storage guide.
